Imitation skills are crucial to teach and we work with many students for whom this is an incredibly difficult skill to acquire. In this tutorial, we share our knowledge and personal experiences on different methods of analysing issues and maximising teaching.
Why Do We Need To Teach Imitation Skills?
- Imitation skills lead to other skills such as language development, play and social skills
- By teaching a student to imitate, it reduces the need for more intrusive prompts in the teaching of other functional skills.
- Imitation from others increases the likelihood of learning in a group, reducing the need for direct teaching in certain contexts.
- Once imitation is learned, it can be a quick skill to do anywhere and is therefore useful for other behavioural interventions, such as using behaviour momentum.
